Wendover 4th graders were infected with GOLD FEVER last week thanks to Newmont Gold.
In two presentations to the fourth grades of Anna Smith and West Wendover Elementary Schools Thursday and Friday, Exploration Geology Manager Jeff Blackmon, Geologist Andrew Giebel and Senior External Relations Representative Pamela Smith brought modern mining up close and personal to the 8 and 9 year olds.
“Gold Fever touches on a wide variety of topics including: Mining, earth sciences, environment, geography, history, sociology, economics, language skills and art,” wrote Smith in a press release. “The kids watch a “Gold Fever” video that is approximately 45 minutes long and covers the above mentioned topics as it surrounds gold.
After the video the kids then participate in a “hands-on” activity – Rockhounds. The objective is through direct observations and manipulations, they learn to classify rocks/minerals according to color, shape, magnetism, and density.”
Newmont is scheduled to begin construction on a new gold mine less than 30 miles west of Wendover in 2015 that will produce more than 500 jobs by 2015.
