The 2012 local election season kicked off early this year with this Wednesday announcement from West Wendover Juvenile probation officer Brian Boatman that he would be running for Justice of the Peace.

Official filing for the office, currently held by Judge Reese Melville opens shortly after the new year and closes some two weeks later.

In a mostly upbeat press release Boatman said one of his main goals if elected would be to establish an interactive web page where people could pay fines on line.

A resident of West Wendover since 2002 Boatman was first a patrol officer with the WWPD and became Juvenile probation officer four years ago.

  1. I was arrested by Brian when he was with WWPD and he is the most professional and courteous cop I ever dealt with. I have seen what he has done in Wendover as a probation officer and he has made the community better. He is not afraid to put the time and effort into giving the best at whatever he does. I know he will be the same as judge in West Wendover. Please get out and support him.

  2. Have only known Brian a short time but am very impressed with his programs and dedication to our young people here in our community. I see his interaction and character with others and know that he will continue these high values and programs even while serving as judge in our community! Brian Boatman for Judge! He’s got my vote!

  3. Thanks for the nice comments! I appreciate it. This is going to be a fun year. I look forward to meeting everyone through the campaign process.

  4. At first I was kinda turned off to the idea of Brian as Judge, mostly because I always thought he was very “Mormon” and for some reason that didn’t sit well with me because I don’t want a Judge giving verdicts based on what the Mormon church tells their people to do. But as I think about it that’s just a knee-jerk reaction, and we can’t judge him based just on his religion. So it will be interesting to see what his ideas are and why he wants to be Judge.

  5. I would like to know more about what he is doing with the youth, this article only mentioned his platform as wanting to do an online fee pay..sounds like a good idea, but not as important as how he intends to help our youth.

  6. I find it funny that people bring religion into everything these days. “very Mormon”, that’s great! Does that make Reese too Catholic or Baptist or whatever he is? I know, he’s too atheist. Give me a break. Let’s elect the guy with experience in court/police matters who also has integrity and morals; someone who can listen to testimony and evidence and make a decision based on those facts and not what people want to hear. Yes, I’m a Mormon. Well, I used to be, and I think they are good and fair people. I don’t know Mr. Boatman, but if he’s being accused of being “very Mormon”, I’d bet he’s a good guy. I agree with Maggie. What is his plan with our town’s youth?

  7. This comment blogger is fun! Here are some of my plans as judge:

    1. I have been asked to teach a criminal justice class at the West Wendover High School through Great Basin College. I think that would be great! If possible, I would like to take advantage of this opportunity.

    2. I will continue to sponsor the W.A.I.T. program on Friday and Saturday nights. This program has proven successful on many levels.

    3. I will continue to work with the children/students at the West Wendover Elementary School. I have been teaching weekly classes there on how to be happy. The lessons are based on the Sean Covey book, “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids”.

    4. I will establish a “stranger danger” program at the Elementary School.

    5. I plan to work with troubled young people and mentor them by starting a program called, “Lunch with the Judge”. The idea here is to take kids that the school feels are heading down the wrong path, talk with them about short and long-term consequences and providing them with other ideas that would lead to better outcomes in their lives. For example, we will talk about drugs/alcohol, education, relationships and financial responsibility.
(This will be done in a lunch setting)

These are some of my ideas at this point. I would also like to hear from the public. After all, elected officials are supposed to be public servants. I will have an open door at the courthouse to hear new ideas on how to keep our youth out of trouble.

Thank you for your interest in our youth,

    Brian Boatman

  8. Brian, you motivater! That is awesome. You would do great as a judge! Your an overacheiver and thats what Wendover needs. Someone who’s dedicated to doing right!

  9. Colton,
Thanks, bud! That’s really nice of you to say. I appreciate that coming from you since you have seen and participated in my programs. I hope you received my letter that I gave to your mom. You’re doing us all proud in Wendover by serving your country. Way to go. Keep your head up and be safe.
    Brian B.

  10. The most impressive thing to me about Officer Boatman, and I have known him a long time, is that he gets things done. He doesn’t just say, “gee it would be nice if this or that happened”, he will go out and do it! I don’t want an elected official that just sits on their hands and wishes something would get done, I would vote for officer Boatman in a second.

  11. Manning, I also used to be Mormon and my experiences when I was raised in Utah are the *reason* I now hesitate when someone looks like they are as I put it “very Mormon”. Like I said though I also realize that is not a logical reaction. But I still have that gut reaction when I see his picture on his webpage and he looks like my old seminary teacher. I’m willing to recognize that I have this feeling, and I’ll bet there are other people who will have the same uneasy feeling when they go into the voting booth but they won’t admit it.

Having said all that I am by no means endorsing Reese, because I *know* I won’t vote for him. He’s a nice guy, but that’s the problem! He’s way too easy on people. That’s why I think it will be interesting to see what Brian wants to do. I already like what he put up about doing things for the kids because that is probably the biggest problem we have in Wendover.

And you’re right that we shouldn’t have to bring religion into everything. But I still bring it up because I don’t want my judge mixing his religion with his job on the bench, because sometimes the Mormon church (like probably all churches) tries to get involved in politics and it shouldn’t. So I want it talked about now when I can still choose who to vote for.

  12. Brian, I did get your letter. I appreciated it greatly.
Everyone else, ignore what his religion is. I wouldn’t care if his Muslim, Brian is a good guy. Like Margret said, Brian gets things done. Who cares if his Mormon, I didn’t even know he was. Regardless, this IS the United States of America and you can believe in whatever you want. I’d rather see Brian as JP than anyone else.

  13. I have posted a website at boatmanforjudge.com . On there, you’ll find some of my plans that I will put in place while in office. We will update the site periodically, so check back every so often. Thanks for all the kind comments. It is nice to see the support!
