The historic town of Tuscarora is under threat of a wildfire accord to reports.
The Wieland Fire, which burned several miles southeast of Rhoads Ranch and eight miles from Tuscarora, remained active Wednesday as heavy winds continued to spread the flames, BLM Elko District public affairs specialist Lesli Ellis-Wouters said.
Ellis-Wouters said structures were threatened but was unsure if ranch homes were in danger.
Firefighters responded to the fire, including six fire engines and four single engine air tankers. Crews were also awaiting the arrival of a heavy air tanker.
The fire — which threatened the town of Tuscarora and sage-grouse habitat — passed below one power line, Ellis-Wouters said.
“We have a lot of assets on the fire,” Ellis-Wouters said, “anything that’s available.”
One of the oldest towns in Nevada, tiny Tuscarora is currently home to an internationally recognized pottery school.
