UPDATE FORMER WEST WENDOVER MAYOR DONNIE ANDERSEN FILES FOR CITY COUNCIL

donniemayelection2014The opening of election filings this week brought few surprises in what promises to be another hard fought season.

In West Wendover three candidates had filed for the four city council seats on the ballot. Incumbent Izzy Guitierez filed for a second term along with new comers John Hansen and Jeff Durham.

The biggest surprise on the Wendover ballot was however in the Recreation District election where one of the original board members Sonny Longson filed after almost 20 years he left local politics. With only three days into the two week filing period no one from the softball party threw his or her hat into the ring but that could easily change.

Lightning-halfpageThe current Recreation District Board earned the ire of some soft ball players last summer when the players started an ad hoc second season after league play ended over insurance payments to the district.

The cost of a new liability policy was quoted at between $300 and $400 or less than $30 a player. In the end the district and the soft ball players agreed to about half that amount.

But softball players warned that last summer’s peace was only a cease fire and that come election time in 2014 they would make their voices heard.

The election in White Pine county is also shaping up to be a hotly contested. At least three races for a county office are already contested. Nichole Baldwin and Patricia Lytte will square off for the County Clerk’s job. As will Kelly Brown and Michael Weable for the District Attorney’s spot and so will Dan Watts and Steve Marquez for sheriff.

wrecfraudWhite Pine County commissioners Mike Lemich and John Lampros filed for re-election and Roman Mariani filed Monday to challenge Lampros and Wednesday withdrew from the race.

Despite Mariani’s withdrawal both commission incumbents are expected to draw challenges by the end of period.

In Elko County it was mostly incumbents who filed during the first three days of the period including Assessor Katrinka Russel, Treasurer Beck Ericksen, Sheriff Jim Pitts, District Attorney Marc Torvinen and Recorder Mike Smales.
