A very anemic voter turn out may have a factor in the strong showing of Delmo Andreozzi over long time Elko County pol John Carpenter in Tuesday election.
With just 22 percent voter turnout Andreozzi, the assistant city manager of Elko came out on top in the three way race with 1579 votes besting John Carpenter’s 1034 votes and Ken Snyder’s 126 votes. Snyder did not campaign and even attempted to withdraw his name from the ballot.
Snyder’s reluctance to campaign was almost matched by Carpenter’s whose number of signs could almost be counted on one hand. In contrast Andreozzi exhibited all the exuberance of a first time candidate and became a frequent attendee at community events across the county from Wendover to Jackpot to Wells and Carlin. The effort was not wasted at least not for the primary. The only question remaining to be answered in November is whether Andreozzi will be remembered.
In the only other contested race in Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts cruised to an easy win over challengers Mindy Kahle and Ron Dickenson. Pitts received 2,298 votes over Kahle’s 1,105 and Dickenson 573.
Elko county’s weak voter turnout appeared positively robust when compared to Wendover’s. With about 700 registered voters just 89 cast ballots. The only locally contested race on the ballot pitted incumbent Gary Corona against Steven Isaacs and Steve Scrother. Corona with 44 votes and Isaacs with 32 ballots will face off again in November.
In contrast with the barely attended primary November’s election should garner a record turnout as voters decide between 16 candidates for four open seats on the West Wendover City Council.
