The controversial forensic audit of the Nevada Northern Rail Road began again Wednesday with a visit by auditor Nicholas Miller to the Rail Road offices.
Unlike the previous visit the auditor entered through the front door without having someone break in through a window.
“He was here today going through our files and books,” said Rail Road director Mark Bassett. “Everyone was very polite and professional.
The on again off again audit has been a pet project of city councilmen Marty Westland and Bruce Setterstrom ever since a regular audit a year go raised some concerns over loans Bassett made to the rail road.
While mostly stopping short of accusing Bassett of out right theft they did persuade their fellow councilmen that something fishy was going on at the railroad.
The audit was however delayed several times due to related lawsuits and counter suits involving the rail road. Last week Ely Mayor Melody Van Camp promised residents that they would know the results of the audit “soon”.
Rail road supporters have long maintained that the audit will find nothing amiss and the whole exercise is a waste of time, resources, and money.
