The GBC Paralegal Studies Program is a one-year, non-credit certificate program taught in Elko and offered by interactive video in Ely, Pahrump, Wendover, and Winnemucca. Courses cost $199 each plus books and materials. Each class is approximately 8 weeks long.
Negrych says he has been impressed with the large reception the program has received since the program started in 2013.
“I understood from my experience working for the Elko District Court that there was a great need for the type of program that GBC is now offering with the Paralegal Program,” said Negrych. “I did not expect an almost overflowing classroom on the first day of class with additional students attending remotely from the satellite campuses.”
Spring 2015 paralegal graduate, Bridgette Gilboy, encourages not only those interested in paralegal studies to complete the program, but she also urges the general public to take a paralegal course.
“The certificate looks great on a resume for anyone interested in working in a law firm, but it’s a great program for anyone living in Nevada to become better informed,” said Gilboy. “I think it’s important to know about law and government as it pertains to our own lives and the state we live in.”
Like many of her classmates, Gilboy was offered a fulltime career upon completing the program at the Elko City Attorney’s Office where she primarily works on criminal cases. She said one of her favorite courses at GBC covered Family Law.
“Family Law deals with divorce, abuse and adoption; anyone can relate to one of those [subjects] in one way or another, whether it’s through their own experiences or through a friend or family member,” said Gilboy. “It was one of those classes where all the students were interested and very attentive.”
After attending law school in Missoula, Mont., she would like to become a criminal prosecutor someday.
