The West Wendover Wolverines are having a great winter sports season this far, with the basketball teams doing great and wrestling starting up strong.
The boys’ varsity basketball team is strong, with a record of 7-4. Last week they finished large tournaments in Las Vegas and Reno, finishing with 4-1, and taking third place. Zade Elton earned a spot on the all-tournament team. They played a tough competition in Reno, but managed to finish with 2-2. In this tournament, they played an amazing game against one of the best 4A schools, Galena, and lost only by two points with a score of 57-55. They beat their next match, Damonte Ranch, in an intense game that went into
overtime, with a score of 66-68. They then lost their next match to Yerington, but bounced back in the next match beating Wooster 57-53. On Tuesday, they played at home against Spring Creek and lost 47-55. Though there were some tough losses, the team is still doing phenomenally well this season, and look to keep it up. League play begins for them on Friday and Saturday and Incline and North Tahoe. Athletes of the week for boys’ varsity are Zade Elton and Brian Flores.
The boys’ JV team is undefeated this far, with 8-0. At their tournament in Battle Mountain they had beat each team they played by 20 points or more; they had beat Lowry with 64-26, Eureka with 81-15, and round mountain with 80-18. They had played Spring Creek at home on Tuesday and beat them with 61-46. Athletes of the week this week for boys’ JV are Saul Palacios and Dante Robles.
The boys’ freshmen team is also doing well this season, with a record of 4-2. Last week they had lost to Wendover, Utah’s JV team with 58-45, but they bounced back at the Battle Mountain JV tournament, finishing with 2-1. Athletes of the week this week for boys’ freshmen are Tommy Kelly and Correa.
They girls’ varsity team has really improved this season, with a record of 10-1. They finished at the Las Vegas tournament with 4-1, and took third place overall. Anahi Esparza earned a spot on the all-tournament team. They beat Rowland Hall with a score of 41-29 last Wednesday. They then travelled to a tournament in Whittel, which is near Reno, this past weekend and went defeated. There, they had beat Wooster with 55-51, Lone Pine with 32-17, beat Owyhee in a comeback in the second half with 43-40, then finished with beating Dayton with 57-49. Sydney Reamer is leading the team in scoring and Anahi Esparza is leading the team in rebounding, and both are athletes of the week for the girl’s varsity. The girls’ varsity team will also begin league play this weekend in Incline and North Tahoe.
The girls jv team is now 5-1 overall. They beat Elko freshmen 35-33, beat Round Mountain 46-5, beat Battle Mountain 26-13, lost to Lowry 34-26, and beat Wendover, Utah 46-25. They will also start league play in Incline. The girls’ JV players of the week are Fabiola Rojas and Leonela Covarrubias.
Wrestling had a great tournament last week, with nine wrestler placing in the Ely tournament. Manuel Guerrero took fourth in his weight catagory of 126 lbs, Nolan
Despirto took third with 126 lbs, Lisandro Rojas took second with 132 lbs, Renzo Dorado took third with 152 lbs, Arturo Flores took second with 170 lbs, Zac Kyllonen took fourth with 182 lbs, Anthony Medina took second with 182 lbs, Rigoberto Carrillo took third with 220, and Isai Quintero took second with 220 lbs. The team took fourth place overall. The team will travel to St. George this weekend for a big tournament. Athletes of the week for wrestling are Arturo Flores and Raul Vargas.
Cheerleaders of the week are Vanessa Gil and Vanessa Stanger.
