The Education Savings Account Program (ESA) provides a means for Nevada Parents with children enrolled in a public/charter school to choose a different option to meet their educational needs. A parent who wishes to choose an alternative to a public school simply can apply for an Education Savings Account and a percentage of what the state funds for their child’s public education will be deposited into an account for that child. The funds can then be used for education related expenses at approved participating entities. Nevada’s ESA program is being administered by the State Treasurer’s Office (STO), who is responsible for establishing the regulations, timelines, and program successes.
A student must attend a Nevada public/charter school for at least 100 uninterrupted school days immediately prior to submitting an application for an account. For more information on the program or to see eligibility requirements, please download a copy of our Parent Handbook.
ESA funds may be used for educational expenses such as: private school tuition, tuition at eligible institutions, distance education, curriculum, tutoring, fees, transportation, specialized services or therapies for students with a disability.
Lately, State Treasurer’s Office announced that it had received over 1,000 more applications during the most recent enrollment period, which ended last week.
Treasurer Dan Schwartz said, “The continued stream of ESA applications indicates the importance which Nevada families attach to educational choice. In spite of great uncertainty over the court-ordered injunction as well as our ability to only take paper applications, the ESA program continues to generate enormous interest among Nevada parents.
“The final briefing period with the Nevada Supreme Court ends one week from today on April 11. We have confidence that the Court will make a decision soon so that families are no longer left in limbo and can proceed with educational plans for their children during the next academic year.”
The next scheduled open enrollment period to apply for an ESA account is May 1 – June 30, 2016. All applications received during the enrollment period were date stamped, and will be processed promptly if the injunction is lifted.
