The Overland Fire, burning in White Pine County about three miles west of the Bald Mountain Mine or five miles south of the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, grew today to an estimated 8,910 acres. There is no immediate threat to the mine or refuge.
The lightning-ignited fire is burning in mule deer, elk and pronghorn antelope habitat, consuming pinion-juniper, brush and grasses. There is a potential future threat to Greater Sage Grouse habitat.
Firefighters continue to implement a full-suppression strategy, using all available assets to protect life and property, and resources. Firefighter and public safety are the top priority.
The fire, which was first reported shortly after 1:15 p.m., yesterday (Monday, August 8) is 10-percent contained with full containment anticipated by Saturday evening, August 13.

The fire was first reported at about 1:18 p.m., Monday, August 8. Firefighters expect to fully contain the fire by Saturday evening, August 13, says Chris Hanefeld, from the Ely BLM district.
A federal official says crews think it will take several days to contain a wildfire after a lightning strike, that has grown to almost 4.7 square miles in remote northeast Nevada rangeland near a stretch of the historic Pony Express trail.
More than 50 firefighters are battling the fire in pinyon-juniper, sage and grass.
Chris Hanefeld, from Ely BLM said that the fire was discovered Monday about 5 miles south of the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge isn’t threatening structures, that has quickly grown to more than 4.5 square miles. The Overland Fire, south of the Ruby Marshes, was called in at 1:18 p.m. and had burned an estimated 2,200 acres by 7 p.m, Monday.
No injuries have been reported.
Hanefeld says it could be contained this weekend.
Hanefeld said the Ruby Marshes were not threatened, nor were any structures or sage grouse habitat.
Full suppression efforts were underway.
Meanwhile, in western Nevada, fire officials are reporting full containment of a more than 2.5-square-mile fire that had threatened 50 homes during the weekend near Cold Springs. No structures burned and no injuries were reported.
