The names of the three applicants to be considered by the commission for appointment to the Elko County District Attorney’s seat was released Tuesday by the Elko County. Since then, one of them, William Schaeffer, a Lander County attorney from Battle Mountain, has withdrawn from consideration.

The selected person would “fill the unexpired term in the vacancy created by the untimely passing of Mark Torvinen,” said County Manager Rob Stokes.

The appointment of this position will end Dec. 31, 2018.

Deputy District Attorney Tyler Ingram, and Interim District Attorney Kristin McQueary are the two applicants to the position.

“The Elko County Commission is scheduled to review the applications, interview the candidates and consider the appointment of the new Elko County District Attorney at the commission meeting on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 5,” said Stokes.

Both candidates were recently asked if they plan to seek election to the office no matter the outcome of this week’s appointment. Deputy DA Ingram is supported by the Elko Sheriff’s Deputy and City Police associations as well as the Carlin and West Wendover law enforcement officer groups with a more recent endorsement from the Nevada Game Wardens Association. Chief Civil Deputy Kristin McQueary is serving as the interim District Attorney.

Elko County District Attorney Torvinen died Aug. 15 of natural causes, in his car.  McQueary was selected to fill the position on Aug. 17 for 60 days, until a permanent replacement is chosen.
