Geri Wopschall Around The County

White Pine County Fire Department hosted State Fire Marshall’s training class on Saturday June 3.

Station 1 on McGill Highway is a perfect location for classes with such intense training.

Invitations were send to all fire departments. There was a very good attendance from all over White Pine County and the City of Ely. I also accepted the invitation. These classes are free to all fire departments and include many different types of classes. Today we learned about putting out a car fire and crawling through a smocked filled maze.

The instructor said the burning car is also used for extraction. They have sound effects in the car, like a crying child. They try to make everything as real as possible so the fire fighters do not panic. It is very important each fire fighter remembers all safety rules in order to protect themselves and the public so they don’t become a victim.

I did not realize there are so many parts on a vehicle that can explode and injure someone. The prop rod that hold up the hood has been know to shoot across the highway. Anything with hydraulics is explosive.

Tires can explode and cause serious injuries. It is very important as to how a burning car is approach.

For information on any class contact the State Fire Marshall. (Information listed below.)

In my last article I described the city Council as being animated. By this comment I meant that they had expression and they showed feeling in their speech. I did not mean they were cartoon characters. (Although that is food for thought. Just joking. If you do not understand anything I say, let me know.)

White Pine County Training 2017

This was open to all volunteers with any fire department , but after talking to the county fire chief agreed that this would be beneficial classes to any citizen in the county.

Training is open to all firefighters and EMTs, including the BLM, The City of Ely fire fighters and EMTs and  to the public.

(I do feel that this is important for the public, because you will know what to expect of our EMTs and firefighters in an emergency. There is no charge for these classes.)

All regular monthly trainings at station one, 1900–2200 hrs. (7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. )

I had the pleasure of attending a retirement barbecue for fire chief William Ward. Bill was Fire Chief at Lackawanna fire station for 21 years. I have had the pleasure of knowing Bill for at least five years. I have never seen Bill without a smile and a kind word. Bill will be missed as fire chief, however I am glad he will stay active with the station.

I am as one citizen, appreciate everything our volunteers do for our community. Bill have a good retirement and enjoy time with Donna.
