On Saturday March 10th Clark County Commission Vice Chair and candidate for Governor Chris Giunchigliani (more commonly known as Chris G) visited West Wendover making her the first candidate for Governor to visit this election cycle. The day began with a meet and greet hosted at the West Wendover Senior Center by the JAS Foundation, Mayor Daniel Corona introduced Chris to the group of 15 West Wendover area residents. Mayor Corona stated that he supported Chris’s campaign for governor after having lived in her Clark County commission district during his time in Las Vegas and seeing her consistently put her constituents ahead of political parties and special interests. He also mentioned her ability to work across the aisle during her 16 years in the state legislature. During her short speech to the group Chris G laid out her vision for Nevada and stated that if elected she would be the education governor, prioritizing Nevada’s public schools which consistently rank last in the nation in per pupil spending. She also talked about improving rural healthcare and senior services. Chris also fielded questions from the group and although there were some disagreements on policy there was an overwhelming appreciation for her taking time out to come to West Wendover and for her refreshing honesty.

After the meet and greet Chris G joined Mayor Corona and local realtor Brenda Claiborne for lunch at Salt Flats Café which although located in Wendover, Utah is owned by West Wendover resident Marcelo Escobedo and family. Chris and Mayor Corona then went out and knocked on doors in order to reach more voters. Voter after voter was surprised to see a candidate for Governor actually knocking on their door willing to listen to their concerns. It was great to finally have a candidate show up and talk to the people of West Wendover. The election is in November and hopefully Chris G’s visit to the community is just the first of many by the candidates for running for office.
