Idaho Man Arrested For Poaching In Nevada
Mark T. Svancara, 43, of Buhl Idaho, faces felony charges of unlawful killing and possessing a big game animal on Oct. 22, 2017. In effect this Idaho man was booked on $10,000 bail this month after an Operation Game Thief investigation determined that a deer was shot in Nevada and dragged across the state line into Utah, where his daughter had a tag.
People driving on Dean’s Pass Road near the state line reported seeing the hunting party drag a large buck about 70 yards and through a fence, according to court documents. Two days later they reported the incident to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
A game warden photographed trail, hair and blood evidence, as well as boot prints, and tracked down the vehicle from photos taken by the witnesses.
Svancara told officials his daughter had a tag out of Utah and had killed the deer in Nevada with a single 150-yard shot.
“It wasn’t until after his daughter shot the buck and he went over a small hill to motion the others in the hunting party to come up the hill that he noticed the orange state line markers,” the game warden stated after his Dec. 12 interview with Svancara.
He did not have an answer when asked why he did not inform NDOW of the mistake, according to the warden.
Svancara showed officials the 3X3 buck’s head, which was in an outbuilding at his residence. It was seized by an Idaho Fish and Game investigator.
