Several weeks ago the White Pine County Sheriff highlighted a scam that was and is taking place, not only in the White Pine County area, but across the state and country. The scam is “identity theft” and many people in White Pine County have had their identity stolen by someone applying for unemployment benefits in their names. On September 1, 2020 the White Pine Sheriff’s Office made an arrest on an individual who is now in custody and is accused of having in his possession identification belonging to several people. At approximately 8:21 am. a Sheriff’s Deputy observed a speeding vehicle traveling on US 93 in White Pine County. The Deputy performed a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified the operator as Toby Alexander age 33 of Santa Maria, CA. During the Deputies investigation it was determined that Alexander was under the influence of a controlled substance. He was arrested and a search warrant was obtained for the vehicle he was operating. During the search of the vehicle, Deputies located several stolen credit cards, personal identification of several people, and methamphetamine. Alexander was charged with possession of stolen credit cards, five counts, possession of stolen identification, five counts, possession of methamphetamine, DUI, basic speed, driving suspended, being under the influence of a controlled substance, and possession of a financial forgery laboratory. His bail was set at $100,000. The Sheriff’s Office investigation into this incident continues.
