Wolverine Cheerleaders
by Kylie Hansen
Football season is kicking off with the WWHS Cheerleaders preparing for an exciting season! The cheerleading team is coached by Heather Brown with seniors Cynthia Hernandez and Citlalli Ruvalcaba as team captains.
Members of the team are the following: senior Lizbeth Vite, juniors America Hernandez, Ivette Rodriguez, Anali Luna, and Samantha Perez, sophomore Aime Hernandez, and freshmen Alyssa Miramontes, Anahi Rodriguez, Nevaeh Covarrubias, Anahi Barboza, Ximena Prieto, and Kylie Hansen.
Coach Brown is proud of her cheerleaders as they have met and continue to meet her expectations by showing up to practice on time, being prepared to work, and having a positive attitude. They are communicating any issues, questions, or comments they have, putting in effort to learn, getting along, and finally, doing their very best. She loves that these things help in bringing them together as a team. She stated, “Most of the people on our team have never done cheer before and somehow we got a lot of people interested,” this has resulted in cheer looking better than ever with one of the biggest teams seen in a long time. The cheerleaders haven’t even been practicing for 3 weeks and already know more than 20 cheers and over half of the dance. They clearly aren’t intimidated by new skills and have dedication and commitment to the team and sport.
Since Coach Brown was in middle school she has been obsessed with cheer and dance and was involved in it her whole life. When offered the high school cheer coach position, she didn’t even question it. She knew she had to take it. She has immense passion for the sport and wants to help grow and strengthen the school’s cheerleading program. She hopes after they graduate that her seniors will go out into the world and continue to be examples of leadership, strength, and hard workers, that they will follow their dreams, and not be afraid to take on challenges, and finally to find success in their lives. In Coach Brown’s words, “I’m looking forward to seeing you guys perform! I can’t wait to see you guys perform on the sidelines, and then I can’t wait to see you guys perform your dance because you’re going to kill it!” Have fun this season WWHS cheerleaders!
Girls Volleyball
by Olivia Reamer
The girls volleyball season is off to a full swing! They’ve competed in pre-season tournaments in Ely and Battle Mountain and are ready for their first league games. The JV Lady Wolverines, coached by Dusty Labrie, have done very well and took 1st place in both of the tournaments. The Varsity Lady Wolverines, coached by Zuzana LaCombe, have played hard with their competition. Get ready to come and support as they will have multiple home games coming up the next few weekends.
The JV team has started off the season very well and have “a lot to offer.” Coach Dusty believes that his team are hard workers. When I asked him how the season is going he seemed to only have positives to say about it: “Our season’s going great, right now [the] team’s working really good together, communication, we don’t have any issues I guess as a team.” He is hoping that his players will get a lot out of this season, he says, “I want everyone to get the best experience they can get out of this, to improve, for everyone to be friends, to become better people, not just on the court but off the court.”
The Varsity team has done well so far in their season and have been working hard. Coach Zuzana says, “All the girls on the varsity team are really really good girls, they work really hard on practice. I can see they love volleyball and they put 100 percent into it, so I can not ask for more.” So far they have played through the tournaments in Ely and Battle Mountain and have played against Wells. Zuzanna hopes that, “the girls will get more confident, more excitement on the games, and it’ll turn it around. I still believe it.”
