Every sports team wishes to compete and hopefully win a State title and then proceed to bring it home. The Lady Wolverines Golf Team has shown grit and competitiveness early in their season . They have already played in two tournaments, first one was in Elko and the second was this past Thursday, September 2, in Battle Mountain. The team received first place in Battle Mountain. Their very own, Kayla Jones, swept the course with an outstanding 90, and Sarah Childress taking second with a 115.
Head Coach, Kathy Durham was in the mindset of rebuilding her team this season as she lost two players from graduation and another going to girls soccer. Mrs. Durham’s roster is now filled with the following: Kayla Jones (Junior), Sarah Childress (Junior), Monah Haney (Junior) and Norma Alvardo (Sophomore). However, she is impressed that her team has exceeded her expectations, “Now that I have seen what they’re capable of, my new expectations are that we are going to be a much more competitive team.” Now, Mrs. Durham doesn’t want to put added pressure on her girls but hopes they place that pressure on themselves to be more competitive.
With any sports team, their ultimate goal is to compete and win at State. Coach Durham believes her team can make an impact as she already knows what to do for practices so her girls can improve, “I think they have the ability to do it, it just depends on the time they put outside of practice.” Other than that, her goal as a coach is to just grow as a team and establish a family type of connection with everyone. On a last note, Coach Durham would like other Lady Wolverines to know that it isn’t too late to still join. Everything is paid for, all you have to do is show up!
