While a West Wendover Police Officer was conducting a traffic stop for traffic violations in the Nugget parking lot, he suspected drug activity. The officer called in a Police K-9 Unit and the handler deployed his K-9 partner on the vehicle, a 2003 Volvo S60 with Utah license plates. K-9 Officer “Vigo” indicated the presence of illicit narcotics.
After further investigation, the officers discovered approximately 2.5 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, approximately 54 grams of suspected heroin and 11 grams of suspected cocaine in the vehicle.(no pictures available while investigation on). Officers also found drug paraphernalia, prescription drugs, a handgun and over $5,000.00 in cash. The combined street value of the illicit drugs is estimated over $20,000. The two suspects, Jeremy Smith, from Sandy, Utah and Alicia Longtin, Bovey, Minnesota, were arrested and booked into Elko County Jail on numerous drug trafficking and possession charges.
Chief of Police Cal Kunz commented “Our officers did a great job stopping these illegal drugs from entering our community. When we keep large quantities of drugs from coming into our city, we reduce the negative impact they have.
The West Wendover Police Department will continue its increased efforts to intercept illicit narcotics and arrest drug traffickers. We have two well trained narcotics detection K-9 units as well as several officers that have specialized training to spot drug trafficking activity.”
