Great Basin National Park, in partnership with the Nevada Arts Council, the Great Basin Heritage Area Partnership and the Border Inn, will be presenting the Border Line Revue: A Look at the Great Basin’s Unique and Colorful Personalities, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. (PDT) at the Border Inn in Baker, Nevada. As part of the Nevada Arts Council’s Tumbleword’s program, Shaun Griffin, noted Nevada poet will be reading selections from his many works. In addition, local talent will be able to showcase their writing and music during the program. All music, poetry and storytelling should relate, in some manner, to Great Basin’s cultural heritage. The Border Inn is located on Highway 50/6 at the Nevada/Utah state line.

On Sunday, September 25, Shaun will be offering a writing workshop. This brown bag (bring your own lunch) program, “Being a Poet in the West” is open to the public and writers of any level are invited to participate. The program scheduled from 12 noon (PDT) to 2 p.m. at the Great Basin Visitor Center Resource Classroom. The Great Basin National Park Visitor Center is located on Highway 487 in Baker, Nevada.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Shaun Griffin, co-founder of Community Chest, a non-profit agency serving children and families in northwestern Nevada since 1991, has published a number of books. His last book of poems was Winter in Pediatrics, included in The Harvest of Lesser Burdens, Art in the Fields of Medicine, published by the Nevada Museum of Art Press, 2006. Bathing in the River of Ashes was published by the University of Nevada Press in 1999, and Death to Silence (translations from the Chilean poet, Emma Sepúlveda) was released by Arte Público Press in 1997. In 1995 he received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. For many years he has taught a poetry workshop at Northern Nevada Correctional Center and published an annual journal of their work, Razor Wire. In 2006, he received the Rosemary McMillan Lifetime Achievement in Art Award from Sierra Arts Foundation.
As a component of the Nevada Arts Council’s Nevada Touring Initiative (NTI), the Tumblewords Program provides communities the opportunity to bring writers who will be “in residence” in Nevada communities to interact with a range of community members through informal outreach services. This program is made possible through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
