Authorities and friends have identified three family members killed in a weekend crash and fire that also badly injured two other people returning home to the Las Vegas area after a trip to Utah. The Clark County coroner said Tuesday that 56-year-old Michael Brandt, 25-year-old Ashley Piena and 20-year-old Carlan Michael Brandt died in the Sunday afternoon wreck on Interstate 15 near Valley of Fire State Park and Moapa.
They were all from Henderson.
Friends say that Michael Brandt was a former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints bishop in the Las Vegas area. They say his wife, Joy Brandt, and son-in-law, Kekoa Piena, were hospitalized with serious injuries.
The Nevada Highway Patrol hasn’t determined what caused the 2002 Toyota Highlander to crash and catch fire.
