This week marks the Jewish New year number 5772, and my goodness a lot has changed since the year 1, most notably that whole agriculture idea really took off, not to mention pants.
Along with popping corks and blowing horns we are supposed to look back at the year and ask forgiveness for all the wrongs we have done either by omission or commission.
An we are do ask forgiveness for any wrong we may have done, one of our ‘friends’ has even compiled a list.
To all of readers Jew and Gentile alike we wish a happy and sweet new year.
At Elko’s Walmart like Walmarts around the country there is a wall of honor for service men and women. It is a nice gesture and there are other businesses who also give honor to those serving under arms.
What is striking is that though there are war memorials aplenty in and around government buildings there are not similar spaces dedicated to those home town boys on the walls of our county court house or city hall.
We are sure space could be found, most of the walls are empty and it would be no great effort to put photos of our local sons and daughters for the recognition they so justly deserve.
Regardless of whether the Elko County School District was somehow legally culpable in the murder of Mickey Costanzo, there is no reason on earth that Kody Patten should have been allowed back on campus after trying to strangle his now partner in crime Toni Fratto.
In addition to showing obvious signs of being a homicidal maniac the boys grades were in the toilet and he had zero chance of graduating.
Yes every child is deserving of an education but when that so called child is throttling other students and menacing teachers, his or her right to an education can be secured out of our public schools.
We have been told again and again by countless teachers, students, and friends of the family that Kody Patten was an evil kid almost from the day he went to preschool. And while granted hindsight is 20/20 we ask that if a kid can get suspended from school for bringing a squirt gun or a pen knife to class shouldn’t an 18 year old man be kicked out permanently for strangling?
That has been a well chosen plan.
