A trio of Iowa men took the philosophy of going green beyond the law when they were caught with several pounds of marijuana in their hybrid Ford Fusion this week in Wells.
According to Elko County Sheriff’s reports at about 11 am Tuesday, deputies observed a white Ford Fusion traveling east on Interstate 80 near mile marker 350 near Wells. Deputies observed the Fusion pulled in front of a eastbound semitrailer, forcing the commercial vehicle to also rapidly slow down to avoid a collision. The Fusion exited Interstate 80 into Wells without using its turn signal.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop and contacted the driver, identified as Pedro Noel DeHoyos III and two passengers Brian Williams and Marcus Williams. All three subjects had different stories about the trip. The deputies then called in a narcotics detection dog, which alerted to the presence of controlled substances. Deputies had the vehicle towed to a secured impound facility.

All three subjects were released while deputies applied for a search warrant, upon receipt of the search warrant a search was conducted on the vehicle. Deputies located a large black duffle bag in the trunk of the vehicle was found to contain a substantial amount of marijuana, approximately 7.5 pounds.
Deputies and Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers located Marcus Williams and Pedro DeHoyos on 6th street in Wells, taking them into custody without incident. The third subject Brian Williams could not be located. All three subjects are from Iowa City Iowa.
Williams and DeHoyos were booked into the Elko County Jail for Possession of marijuana, Unlawful possession/sales of marijuana and Conspiracy to violate the uniformed controlled substance act bail set at $20,000.00 each.
The Ford Fusion is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version developed by the Ford Motor Company, and launched to the U.S. market in March 2009.
EPA ratings for the Ford Fusion Hybrid are 41 miles per gallon for city and 36 miles per US gallon for highway. A full tank delivers 700 miles in city driving. Despite its frugal gas usage this Fusion as well as its occupants may not be traveling far or soon.
