Coloring contest highlights ways to stay “Fit for Duty”
As part of Newmont’s continuing effort to educate employees about the importance of coming to work fit for duty, Long Canyon’s Vital Behaviors team sent out an informational mailer to site employees. It included a guide from the Employee Assistance Program on how to cope with shift work, as well as info on the Wellness Program and benefit options. To encourage family involvement in “Fit for Duty” awareness at home, coloring sheets accompanied the packet. Family members were encouraged to create and submit artwork with a Fit for Duty theme. The winning entries are shown above. Thanks to all the participants and to all of those who helped coordinate and drive the campaign.
Safety Share: Family Emergency Plans
Do you and your family have an emergency plan in place? The National Safety Council recommends all families have one set. It is important to review and practice the plan at least once a year. The below guidelines will help you get started on your emergency plan today:
- A getaway plan from inside the house and outside of the house including various routes and destinations in different directions
- Outdoor meeting location if it safe to go outside
- A shelter-in-place plan if outside air is contaminated; FEMA recommends sealing windows, doors and air vents with plastic sheeting
- Outline of how your family members will contact one another
- Identify responsibilities of each member of your household
- Discuss the location of the first aid kit, fire extinguishers, flash lights, etc.
“Poker Run” promotes safety shares
Long Canyon is gearing up for a contest designed to engage and entertain employees, while encouraging regular safety interactions. In advance of a crewbased safety “Poker Run” in April, the site’s safety team built decks of poker cards on which are printed safety shares covering safety topics related to home, work, mental health, ethics, environmental, and human resources. Crews can choose topics from the cards to discuss in meetings and other gatherings that include safety shares, each time buiding a “hand” of documented safety shares – cards marked with the dates that their respective shares were discussed. In early May, crews will submit their final hands, and the highest one will determine the winner. Good luck to all the participating crews!
Wells and Wendover Clean-up Event
In honor of Earth day, volunteers from Newmont’s Long Canyon mine took the afternoon to participate in a clean up event for the communities of Wells and Wendover. In Wells, the group picked up trash, raked, and swept the sidewalks near the City Park and High School. The West Wendover group picked up trash and cleaned up around the city’s new elementary school and Florence Way.
