July 23rd, the Elko County Sheriff’s Office anounced that during the dates of July 17th – 19th, 2018, a sex offender compliance check was conducted in the County of Elko. The Elko County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Marshals Service – Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada Parole and Probation – Reno and Elko, and the Las Vegas Metro Police Department all participated in the compliance check. Currently, ninety percent of the offenders in Elko County are compliant. Operations are still ongoing to verify those offenders who were not home or otherwise not located. Elko County currently has approximately one hundred and forty registered sex offenders residing within the county.

TELEPHONE SCAM

Once again, the Elko County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a telephone scam that has been occurring in Elko County. The Sheriff’s Office has received several reports wherein the caller identifies himself as an employee of the Elko County Sheriff’s Office and uses the name of an actual Sheriff’s Office employee. The caller then advises the victim that they have or will have a warrant of arrest issued. They are instructed to buy “Reloadit”, “Greendot” or other type of card(s) with the ability to acquire cash for a certain amount, sometimes upward of $2000.00. The victim then gives the card number to the suspect who in turn collects the funds.

The Sheriff’s Office wishes to advise the public that we do not notify people by telephone regarding warrants, we never accept funds for bail or fines via a card or any other means by telephone and are unaware of any agency that does. All bails and fines are collected at the Sheriff’s Office via cash, credit card or money order.

The Sheriff’s Office advises citizens receiving such calls not to conduct any transactions with the individuals calling and to contact any agency that is allegedly being represented to confirm their protocol for the collection of fines and bails. Any citizens receiving these calls are encouraged to notify the Sheriff’s Office or other local law enforcement agency.
