West Wendover Branch Public Library of the Elko-Lander-Eureka County Library System provides opportunities for the whole family. September 18th the library held its Fall Kick-Off Event for the Family Literacy & STEAM program. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Librarian Kelly Eveleth, previously a teacher in the local school system, integrates literacy with a variety of activities. This is the fourth year for the community outreach program and each year different resources are found to provide some learning experiences for the whole family. Also, a Family Book Club was started last year and will continue this fall.
Every week on Tuesdays after school at 3:45 p.m. this free Literacy & STEAM enriched program will occur focusing on different components of STEAM. Activities for all ages will be taking place starting at 3:45 and registration is not required. The Library System also collaborates with the Wells Family Resource Center. Once a month, a team from Wells joins the Wendover library in providing a learning experience for the children and a parenting class for the adults. Wells Family Resource Center also provides a parenting program. Parents can contact Wells Family Resource Center for more information by calling (775) 752-2345.
In addition to the STEAM activities, a Family Book Club meets at a separate time once a month. Last year the families read A Wrinkle in Time, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Frindle, and others. The way the book club works is that families are provided one book and the book is read together at home. Then, on a designated afternoon the participants get together and chat about the book and sometimes additional special activities are included. If families are interested in the Family Book Club, please contact the West Wendover Branch Library to sign up and so that enough books can be obtained for this part of our Literacy Program.
Programs at the Wendover public library are free and are funded through grants and donations. The West Wendover Branch Library has the following hours: Monday & Wednesday 12 to 6 p.m., Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m., Thursday & Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you have any questions about the library events, feel free to call at (775) 664-2510 or visit us on the corner of Florence Way and Camper Drive.
