Elko District Judge Nancy Porter accepted a no contest but mentaly ill plea from an Elko man accused of trying to pass a forged check last August at the Peppermill after he claimed it was a demon’s fault.

William Senrud, 28, of Elko twice blamed demons for his attempt to pass a bad check at the the Wendover Casino last August in a disjointed explanation to Judge Porter on why he was accepting the plea deal. A diagnosed shizophrenic Senrud according to public defender Alina Kilpatrick was not taking his medication at the time of the crime.

While the same as a guilty plea the deal would allow Porter to sentence Senrud to a metal health diversion program if the man is found suitable for treatment.

Senrud according to police reports reprinted on page 9 may have been part of a bogus check cashing ring that targetted wendover casinos over the summer.

He will be sentenced in May. Click link below for his court appearance.
