Earl Columbus pled not guilty to the attempted murder of a 14 year old Ruth girl and his trial has been set for May 22.
Columbus, 18, is still being held on a $250,000 bond for the October 3rd 2011 attack on a 14 year old girl also of Ruth.
According to White Pine Sheriff Captain, the girls family had recently moved to Ruth from Phoenix, Arizona and Columbus also from the Phoenix area followed them and at the time of the attack was actually living behind the families home in a trailer provided by his victim’s parents.
According to the Sheriff’s report of that night deputies were call a little after midnight on October 3rd having received a report of a individual who had broken into a residence in Ruth and had stabbed one of the occupants.
Officers reported that when they arrived on scene the suspect in the incident had fled the area. Inside the residence they located a female juvenile age fourteen who had received a deep stab wound to her chest and a severe cut on her hand. She was transported to E.R. By ambulance and was later life flighted to Las Vegas. The girl and her parents identified the attacker as Earl Columbus. Officers located Columbus, 18, he was still armed with the knife. When officers gave Columbus commands to drop the knife he repeatedly stabbed himself in the stomach area. An officer used his Taser to subdue Columbus. He was then detained and transported to E.R. by ambulance. He was life flighted to Salt lake City and after recovering from his wounds was extradited back to Ely.
