Sir Walter Scott’s 200 year old lament ‘Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive’ rang true once again true for a Utah woman in Wendover last week.
Jamie Lucero, of Taylorsville was arrested on a variety of charges last Friday night that began with were being questioned by a Tooele County Sheriff’s deputy over a possible car burglary in the Montego Bay Parking lot.
When asked who she was Lucero lied and lied badly in this age of instant verification. She not only gave the officer an obvious phoney name and birth date, according to the WWPD press release but she also gave him a social security number belonging to a man.
By then West Wendover police were called in to search Lucero hotel room. Upon service of the search warrant it was discovered that there were numerous fraudulent checks, stolen identification, and stolen credit cards.
Additional charges were sought for possession of stolen property, possession of a credit card without the owner’s consent and possession of a forged instrument.
She was transported to the Elko County jail and was released after posting a $21,780 bail.
West Wendover Casinos are a favorite stop for Salt Lake identity thieves who take advantage of the border towns relative close proximity to Salt Lake City and relatively liberal check and credit card cashing policies to empty out ill gotten accounts from unsuspecting marks.
The smart ID thieves however do not try to burgle cars while they are running up outrageous credit card bills.
Lucero made bail after spending the night in the Elko County Jail.
