ELKO, NV, January 6, 2014 — The Elko County Republican Party (ECRP) announced the schedule for the Elko County Republican Precinct meetings next week, with most precinct meetings occurring on Saturday, January 11. “This is the time for people to get involved and influence their parties of choice and to help the parties better represent the people,” says Lee Hoffman, Chairman of the Elko County Republican Party. “Everyone needs to be vocal, start local and participate, no matter what party you want to support.”
Major political parties are required by law and by custom to hold precinct meetings in every even-numbered year. In presidential election years, precinct meetings may coincide with a presidential preference poll. That will happen next in 2016. At precinct meetings, neighbors (precincts are organized by neighborhoods) gather to share their political views, elect delegates to the county convention for their party, nominate members to serve on their county party’s central committees to guide the local party, and to influence the party’s platform. Delegates elected at the precinct meetings to attend the county convention and may be advanced to attend the party’s state and national conventions.
“We are a representative republic, not a direct democracy,” Lee Hoffman explains, “but that only works if people are engaged at the local level and take part in deciding who will represent them throughout the process. So it’s really important that people get involved early and are willing to help with some of the tasks that need to be done. I urge you to attend your precinct meeting and even consider putting your own name forward to be a delegate or serve on your party’s central committee.”
Elko County Republican precinct meetings are scheduled between Wednesday, January 8 and Saturday, January 11, with most meetings being held at public schools throughout the county. The majority of the meetings are scheduled for the morning of January 11. The Elko County Republican Central Committee quarterly meeting will be held in conjunction with the precinct meetings on Saturday, January 11.
