WWHS student Anthony Arteaga met with Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and members of the Nevada Legislature, Monday, as part of the schools Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program.
Arteaga traveled with JAG Specialist Lysette Perez to represent WWHS at the state capital. For a majority of the JAG students, visiting the capital was a first time experience. One student from each of the 22 JAG schools in Nevada were picked to represent their school in Carson City for the first ever JAG Legislative Day.
Students’ ternary included-Breakfast with senators/assemblymen/lobbyists
-Open discussion with Nevada Supreme Court Justices
-Tour of the State Capital Building
-Visit with senators/assemblymen in their offices
-Meet and Greet with Governor Sandoval
JAG is a new program at West Wendover High School. The purpose of JAG is to help Nevada’s youth earn a high school diploma with the skills to excel in the workforce and/or in post-secondary education, regardless of personal obstacles. One of its main objectives is community service.
“Anthony was given a few minutes to speak to our government officials at the JAG breakfast and he truly did a great job. Speaking in front of classmates can be difficult at times but having to make a speech in front of government officials was a little more difficult.” said Perez. “He was very nervous but you would have never known. He stood tall and did everything that was expected of him. Anthony has really come a long way. Not very many students are presented with the opportunity that Anthony had been presented with, I am so proud of him. The whole day was so AWESOME! Anthony truly did an amazing job representing WWHS.”
