This June 22nd, Firefight- ers responded to the Sidehill Fire burning near Kixmiller Summit, about two miles west of Pony Springs in Lincoln County. There is a potential threat to private property and homes in the area.
“The BLM responded aggressively with both aerial and ground resources,” Tye Petersen, BLM Ely District fire management officer, said.
Fighting the approximate- ly 30-acre fire are seven engines, one helicopter, three Single Engine Air Tankers, or SEATs, a bull- dozer, water tender and two Type 2 Nevada Di- vision of Forestry hand crews. Assisting the BLM are the Pioche Volunteer Fire Department, Lin- coln County Fire Protec- tion District and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Public and firefighter safe- ty are the top priority.
The fire, which began as a vehicle fire, was first reported at about 5 p.m., Tuesday evening. It is burning in pinion-pine and juniper, and sagebrush.
Firefighters, the next morning, June 23rd secured fireline and began to mop-up at the site of the fire near Kixmiller Summit, about two miles west of Pony Springs in Lincoln County.
Full containment of the approximately 30-acre fire was anticipated by late afternoon. Mop-up is expected to continue for about two more days. “We’re being extra diligent of homes in the area,” Ray Maestes, BLM Ely District assistant fire manage- ment officer, said. Maestes credited the coordination between federal, state and local agencies, as well as the availability of resources, for catching the fire so quickly.
At its height, the fighting forces were directly en- gaged in or supporting the firefighting effort. Five engines, the two hand crews and one water tender re- main on scene today.
